Active Cooling Solutions For Demanding Next Generation Backhaul

12015 July

With the greater heat dissipation requirements of modern digital radio transmission systems for all outdoor use and the desire for quieter and longer lasting solutions for indoor use, SAF Tehnika has been conducting testing and long-term research into these subject areas to maximize cooling efficiency, energy consumption, and overall lifetime of the active cooling component. The result of years of analysis of active cooling solutions (heat pumps, fans, etc.) used in conjunction with passive cooling solutions (heat sinks) has resulted in what SAF Tehnika believes is the best of breed technology – innovative synthetic jet air pump technology used in conjunction with heat sinks. With the greater heat dissipation requirements of modern digital radio transmission systems for all outdoor use and the desire for quieter and longer lasting solutions for indoor use, SAF Tehnika has been conducting testing and long term research into these subject areas to maximize cooling efficiency, energy consumption, and overall lifetime of the active cooling component. What is a Synthetic Jet?

A synthetic jet is an oscillating diaphragm that utilizes a specially designed chamber to create a pulse of high-velocity air (the jet) to push hot air away from the passive cooling heatsink. The oscillation is produced utilizing electromagnetic actuators to minimize friction in the chamber and prevent the need for mechanical parts that require lubrication and are prone to failure, especially in outdoor environments. Due to the design of the nozzles and the oscillating pulses of air (versus a steady flow of air from a fan for instance), the pulse of air is turbulent in nature and creates a secondary flow of air (otherwise known as entrained air) which is up to 10x more powerful than the pulse of air from the synthetic jet engine.

Why Synthetic Jet Technology for SAF Tehnika?

SAF Tehnika is pioneering the use of synthetic jet technology in our radio systems due to the tremendous cooling benefits these devices provide while allowing SAF to maintain our core design principles behind the Integra platform - lightweight, energy efficient, and 100% corrosion resistant materials. Additional benefits include:

• 5 Year Manufacturer Warranty
• IP-56 rated design
• No moving parts to wear out
• Super quiet - operation is undetected in most
environments
• Low power consumption
• Field replaceable
• Wide temperature range performance

Conclusions

SAF Tehnika is pleased to be an industry leader in utilizing Synthetic Jet technology to actively cool our next generation all-outdoor very high power radio systems to deliver the best performance in-line with SAF’s well-known reputation for quality and product excellence. As shown by our extensive research and testing, the new Integra outdoor solution with synthetic jets delivers the best overall value to SAF customers in terms of performance and reliability while allowing SAF to build higher transmit output power radio systems that passive cooling alone could not manage.
